Traditionally, women haven’t been the go-to market for Science Fiction writers. With the growing interest in dystopian literature, however, and the ever broadening definition of what constitutes scifi, women everywhere are falling in love with the remote, mysterious, and sometimes scary alternate realities of the science fiction genre. Modern moms are definitely in need of escape, and this list of scifi novels is sure to provide moms everywhere with an out-of-this-world experience while enjoying the comforts of home.
First Must Read: Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley is a classic for a reason. Not only was Ms Shelley a trailblazer for women’s rights during her time, she also crafted a timeless message of science v ethics and what it means to be a human being. Her story is touching, relevant, and will leave you with a book hangover and plenty of food for thought for months to come. Who is the monster and who is the man?
Second Must Read: The Time-Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger is both a stunning romance and a compelling trip into a fantasy world where certain individuals are not bound by time or space, and neither is true love for that matter. Moms, have your tissues ready! The movie version only got mediocre reviews, but the book is a gem.
Third Must Read: Snowden, NSA surveillance, anyone? 1984 by George Orwell gets a breath of fresh air, as questions surrounding totalitarianism, technology, and the right to privacy is on every American’s mind these days. If 1984 isn’t mom’s cup of tea, than Brave New World by Aldous Huxley where motherhood, natural childbirth, and families are considered obscene, is sure to ignite a maternal response.
Fourth Must Read: One of the unknown commandments is thus, “Thou shalt not only read really important literature.” Moms need mental breaks as well as physical ones, and Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi is the perfect dystopian Young Adult scifi read when mom simply wants entertainment that doesn’t require tissues, a dictionary, or post-reading philosophical and moral discussions. Although this YA book is a part of a trilogy, it is a great stand-alone read. The story tells the tale of two very different young people coming together in a world that is slowly closing in on humankind. It will leave mom smiling and remembering her own first love.
Fifth Must Read: The Lord of the Rings trilogy by JRR Tolkien is more fantasy than scifi, but it is a trilogy that women everywhere can sink their teeth into. Sacrifice, good versus evil, and a king who needs the love and support of a beautiful elven princess in order to fulfill his destiny – that’s the ticket for hours of reading pleasure. Added reading bonus – Mom can follow up her reading with a little bit of eye candy (aka Viggo Mortensen) in the movie version!
Moms everywhere are joining in the renewed literary interest in the scifi genre, and loving it! Whether it’s picking up scifi classics for the first time, or escaping into more romantic or lighthearted scifi reads, these top five picks definitely get the ‘Mom-stamp’ of approval!
